Week 4 News and Notes

Joe Is Very Proud Of His Calves

Three Stars of the Week

Third Star: Joe Lops’ Calves, Mega Touch. Mega Touch had the upset of the day with their stunning 3-2 overtime win against the defending champion Happy Little Elves.  Captain Julie Katz gives full credit to Lops’ calves, noting, “The team draws energy from them.  We look to them for inspiration.”  Lops had a hand in all three of his team’s scores with one goal and two assists.
Second Star: Alex Derhohannesian, Gouging Anklebiters. The Biters finally got off the schneid, defeating La Famiglia 4-3 in an overtime thriller. Derho tallied two goals in the contest, including the game-winner in OT to propel his team to its first victory this season.
First Star: Craig “Ug” LaCombe, Unicorns.  Ug is starting to make this look too easy.  LaCombe recorded his league-leading third shutout of the season on Sunday in the Unicorns’ 3-0 win against the Mathematics.  He has now surrendered just one goal in the team’s first four games.

Shaun deLacy GAA Watch

This year, due to a series of stupid bets made by Happy Little Elves goalie Shaun deLacy, the media will track his goals against average over the course of the regular season.

Goals Allowed This Week: 3 (vs. Mega Touch)
Goals Allowed Previously: 11
Goals Allowed This Season: 14
Games Played: 4
Goals Against Average: 3.5
Next Opponent: Denim Demons (2.5 goals per game)

Despite the Elves’ disappointing overtime loss to Mega Touch, Shaun actually improved his goals against average this week, allowing just three goals.  His GAA may have dropped slightly to 3.5, but he is still a ways off from his target of 2.0.  This week, he faces the Denim Demons, last year’s regular season champions.  Although the matchup seems daunting, the Demons’ offense has produced just one goal in the the team’s last two games.

Rose Charities Tournament Recap

As totals continue to roll in from the Rose Charities Tournament on April 9, it’s safe to say the event was a complete success. According to organizer Rachel “A-Korn” Greene, player donations from the tourney itself raised over $4,000.  In addition, the raffle made another $350, and Fish Market’s contribution is still being tallied.  The money will fund several disaster relief teams based in Japan that are providing medical care and food to the earthquake victims.

Because of everyone’s generosity, Greene explicitly wants to thank everyone who came out to play hockey, as well as those who helped her organize and run the festivities. She notes, “The success of this event reminds me of how proud I am to be a part of this community and call you all my friends. It was a great day of hockey with great people…who are all so generous and supportive of people in need.”

Unfortunately, one occurrence did leave a small blemish on an otherwise great day of hockey, fun, and community spirit.  Greene explains, “The only hiccup was Rich Glanzer being a poor sport and switching teams halfway through the tournament, which was never authorized. I have organized a committee to look into the matter, and to possibly strip him of his title.”
