Week 17 Preview

Rod Does Not Think Highly Of The Dark Rainbows

Rod

GAME OF THE WEEK
What The Puck (12-3) vs. Dark Rainbows (10-3-0-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 3:00 PM
All-Time Series: Dark Rainbows lead 5-4
Game Notes: Despite these teams’ relative proximity in the standings, What The Puck and the Dark Rainbows are heading in opposite directions.Ā  After a brief swoon, What The Puck has returned to form in the last two weeks.Ā  Following the team’s 7-1 loss to Filthy Gorgeous in week 14, captain Larry “Mad Dog” Zimmer read his team the riot act, demanding more accountability and less complacency from his Orange Juggernaut.Ā  The team obviously responded, as it scored 12 goals in wins over two division rivals.Ā  Conversely, the Dark Rainbows have allowed 12 goals in their last two games and have struggled to produce any type of real offense.Ā  This reversal of fortune has dropped them from sole possession of first place to a tie for fifth.Ā  As the Rainbows look to break out of their funk, a win over What The Puck would keep them in the running for first place and go a long way in returning their early season swagger.
Keys To The Game:
1. What The Puck grizzled veteran Tom MacDonald returned to the lineup last week after summering in Nova Scotia.Ā  His impact was felt immediately, as he scored his 10th goal of the season in his team’s 2-1 win.
2. John Nielsen leads the Dark Rainbows with 14 goals.Ā  He has not scored in his team’s last two games, but What The Puck will still need to guard him closely.Ā
3. In an effort to emulate What The Puck’s winning formula, Rainbows captain Sean Reynolds plans on wheeling goaltender John Meyer to the court inĀ a goalie bag.Ā  Reynolds also plans to smile sheepishly while doing so.
Eliā€™s Pick: What The Puck.Ā  Mad Dog’s strong arm tactics seem to be working.
Derekā€™s Pick: What The Puck.Ā  Their high-scoring offense does not bode well for the suddenly sieve-like Rainbows D.
Watchability: 4.5 Doucets

Rehabs (7-4-0-3) vs. Mighty Squirrels (5-9-1)
Location: Tompkins East, 2:00 PM
All-Time Series: Rehabs lead 4-1-1
Game Notes: The Rehabs finally ended their six-game losing streak last week, winning convincingly over Rubens Division rival Cobra Kai 7-2.Ā  The Mighty Squirrels will look toĀ end a losing streak of their own, as they have lost their last two games.
Eliā€™s Pick: Rehabs
Derekā€™s Pick: Rehabs
Watchability: 3.5 Doucets.Ā  Their past matchups have tended to be fairly chippy, so the same can be expected on Sunday.

Denim Demons (10-0-2-2) vs. Cobra Kai (3-10-1-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 2:00 PM
All-Time Series: Denim Demons lead 3-0-1
Game Notes: As the Demons enter the final third of their regular season schedule, it is becoming progressively more impressive that they have still not lost a game in regulation time.Ā  They have won four in a row and are looking to sweep the season series against their Rubens Division foe Cobra Kai.
Eliā€™s Pick: Denim Demons
Derekā€™s Pick: Denim Demons.Ā  “Sweep the series.”
Watchability: 2 Doucets

LBS, Inc. (11-3) vs. Fresh Kills (5-8-0-1)
Location: Tompkins East, 3:00 PM
All-Time Series: Fresh Kills leads 10-5
Game Notes: Fresh Kills has been scuffling in recent weeks, as the defending champions have gone four games in a row without a win.Ā  In fact, only one player,Ā Dave Sokolyansky, has been able to find the back of the net, asĀ he has accounted for all four of the team’s goals during this stretch. LBS, Inc. has won eight consecutive games and will be looking for some retribution against Fresh Kills, whoĀ eliminated the Corporation from the playoffs in 2007 (first round) and 2008 (semifinals).
Eliā€™s Pick: LBS, Inc. “The Alpha Male” Ken Poulin makes a triumphant return from a two-game “absence.”
Derekā€™s Pick: LBS, Inc.
Watchability: 3 Doucets

Gouging AnklebitersĀ (7-7-1) vs. Sky Fighters (8-6)
Location: Tompkins East, 4:00 PM
All-Time Series: Sky Fighters lead 7-4
Game Notes: The anticipation is extremely high for this Schloeder Division matchup, as Gouging Anklebiter Nestor “Marmaduke” Nonato has made the bold guarantee thatĀ he willĀ send a lot of shots at “Sky Fighter’s Goalie”.Ā  One of the Sky Fighter’s many goalies, Robert Kucera, looks forward to it.
Eliā€™s Pick: Gouging Anklebiters. They have been putting their collective foot down a lot in recent weeks.
Derekā€™s Pick: Sky Fighters.Ā  Kuci’s confidence is evident due to his choice ofĀ emoticonĀ that heĀ included with his comments (:o).
Watchability: 3.5 Doucets

Corlears Hookers (10-2-1-1) vs. Mexican Standoff (3-11-0-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 4:00 PM
All-Time Series: Corlears Hookers lead 2-0
Game Notes: Corlears Hookers forward Jason Eitel has scored 16 goals this season, putting him fourth in BTSH, five goals behind league leader Karsten Pichon of LBS, Inc. Eitel has made his desire to win the scoring title well known, and with the Hookers having two games scheduled this week, he can make a strong push towards the top.
Eliā€™s Pick: Corlears Hookers
Derekā€™s Pick: Corlears Hookers
Watchability: 1.5 Doucets.Ā  With no Hookers promotion planned for this week, attendance will be low.

Filthy Gorgeous (10-3-1) vs. Happy Little Elves (6-8-1)
Location: Tompkins East, 5:30 PM
All-Time Series: Filthy Gorgeous leads 1-0
Game Notes: Because the Happy Little Elves’ primary color is electric lime, there is absolutely no chance that Filthy Gorgeous will don their retro 2006 jerseys for this game.Ā Ā So, no need to e-mail Monica this week, guys.
Eliā€™s Pick: No pick. Eli will be reffing this game.
Derekā€™s Pick: Filthy Gorgeous. Of course, the Elves could pull a fast one and wear their black out jersey(s).
Watchability: 2.5 Doucets

Tuques (5-10) vs. Mega Touch (3-11-1)
Location: Tompkins West, 5:30 PM
All-Time Series: Tuques lead 7-5
Game Notes: After allowing Mexican Standoff to earn its first win of the season in week 14, the Tuques haveĀ soared in the last two weeks.Ā  Their offense has come alive, scoringĀ a combined 16 goals in victories against the Mathematics and Happy Little Elves.Ā  They will look to continue their hot streak this week against Woodsworth DivisionĀ rivalĀ Mega Touch, a team they shutout 5-0 in week 11.
Eliā€™s Pick: Tuques.Ā  Tuques hockey.
Derekā€™s Pick: No pick.Ā  Derek will be reffing this game.
Watchability: 2 Doucets

HOCKEY NIGHT IN TOMPKINS (National Telecast)
Unicorns (8-7) vs. Mathematics (3-8-1-3)
Location: Tompkins East, 6:30 PM
All-Time Series: Unicorns lead 4-0
Game Notes: Two Woodsworth Division rivals will face off in the national telecast of Hockey Night in Tompkins.Ā  The Mathematics entered the season winlessĀ in this small but intense feud, andĀ the Unicorns continued thisĀ trend as they wonĀ these teams’ week 2Ā matchupĀ in a shootout.Ā  However, both teams have struggled in the last few weeks, as the Mathematics have lost their last five games, while the Unicorns have lost three in a row and four of their last five.
Watchability: 2.5 Doucets.Ā  The Unicorns are known for their close, competitive games.

HOCKEY NIGHT IN TOMPKINS (Regional Telecast)
Corlears Hookers (10-2-1-1) vs. Sky Fighters (8-6)
Location: Tompkins West, 6:30 PM
All-Time Series: Tied 1-1
Game Notes: This is a makeup for a game that wasĀ postponed due to “rain fears” on August 2.Ā  Although it is a Hockey Night in Tompkins game, due to its late addition to the schedule, it will only be shown in the Corlears Hookers’ and Sky Fighters’ home markets.Ā  If the Corlears Hookers are victorious in their early game, a win here would at worst put them in a tie for first place.
Eliā€™s Pick: Corlears Hookers.Ā  Even though it’s only a regional telecast, they still relish the spotlight.
Derekā€™s Pick: Corlears Hookers.Ā  Their biggest weakness, attendance, has not been an issue in the last few weeks.
Watchability: 4 Doucets

Eli: 64-36
Derek: 64-38
