Three Stars of the Opening Round of the Playoffs

Written by JW

3rd Star
The Refs

It isn’t easy to ref, especially in a playoff game. However, I couldn’t help but notice that the refs did a great job this week. They kept the games calm, they conferred with each other to make sure they got every call right (there was even some checking of the rule book, which I of course loved!). Glanzer, Isaac, Welch, Hogg, Sam, whoever else reffed yesterday…nice work.

Stripes, for handling a tough job with aplomb, I award you 3rd star of the week.

Sleeves!

2nd Star
jessICA D. of the Dark Rainbows

Disclaimer: The Rainbows probably really deserve a team star, as this was a solid team win, and a notable upset. However, read on and you’ll find out why -ica gets the extra nod.

Going into this game, most people thought the Rainbows didn’t have much of a chance. Walshy even predicted a 5-2 Butchers win at prom the night before. However, the Butchers lost Pete to injury less than 48 hours before puck drop (get well soon Pete!), this coupled with Dave St. J being unable to make the game was very unfortunate for the Knife Pigs. That said, the Butchers still had many great players present, and the Rainbows did exactly what they needed to do to win this game.

After an exciting back and forth start to the 1st half (with the game still scoreless at this point), Jessica-minus-the-Jess-part took an amazing cross-ice pass from Bryan and perfectly one touched it on her backhand, short side past Tim, to notch her first career goal. Her incredibly delayed reaction said it all: “Wait, is that IN?? Did I just score?! Whoa, I finally scored!!”. My favorite part about this goal was that she has been lamenting not scoring all season, however Yetter and myself predicted at prom that she would score in the big game the next day. We all know how I feel about being right.

“This was supposed to be a candid photo.”

But that wasn’t all she did. Hustling up and down the court, she made every shift count. She won battles, made smart passes, shut down people defensively. She did it all. Myself and a certain unnamed sleeveless neanderthal were incredibly impressed. As were the rest of the crowd on the sidelines. I told her she played the game of her life, whereas Glanzer (oops I named him) probably told her some long-winded story about a similar game he played on Long Island 20 years ago.

She may lose a lot of running races off the court, but she is certainly getting the hang of this street hockey thing. (This was for you, Hicks!)

Congrats, kid. A well-earned star of the week.

1st Star
The social committee/the people that made 70s Prom happen

The Farrah Fawcetts of the league grooved. The John Travoltas did the hustle. Everyone had a great time. Even the person who won the “Most likely to graduate a virgin” award, for the 2nd year running. Dammit. (I love you all.)

Tim K. kept the discotheque jumping all night long with everything from The Bee Gees to Grandmaster Flash. Marko and Cheeky were the MCs with the mostest. Whoever set up the photobooth did an even better job with it this year (Peaches and Liza, I think?). To the people who helped set up, make awards, pick up balloons – Sarah H., the Trembles, Michelle, Tia, Jessica, Eli, Popack – we salute you. Probably some other people I am missing.

Also, big ups to Prom Queen and King, Caitlin and Scotty K!

We should also probably commend whatever bar staff were responsible for cleaning the vomit, food scraps, and dignity off of the Dewey’s floor.

Another prom in the books. Thanks all!

Honorable mention

Peaches – The photo says it all.
