Recap Week 5

BTSH WEEKLY RECAP – WEEK 5
by Eli Kazin

The Games

KARSTEN PITCHON IS NOT A FAN OF THE BEACH. In the first game between the two teams since last season’s infamous “Beach Day”, Karsten Pitchon scored four goals, including the game winner, and Ken Poulin added a goal as LBS defeated Mexican Standoff, 5-3. Tim Olson, Tommy Cho, and Gary Cohen scored goals for Mexican Standoff, who utilized the goalie platoon of Cho (first half) and Haanwa Chau (second half).

THE PURPOSE OF A SHOOTOUT IS TO ELIMINATE TIES. Zack Tinkelman scored the tying goal with the extra attacker on and less than one minute remaining in regulation, and the Denim Demons rallied from a two-goal deficit to salvage a 2-2 tie against the Unicorns. Goalies Craig Lacombe and Jim Morris shined in the shootout, where neither team scored on any of the six attempts.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, COOP. Alex Eben Meyer, also known as Coop, celebrated his birthday with a goal, and Danny Canarick and Eric Devlin contributed goals as the Bad Touch rallied from a two-goal deficit to trump the Gouging Anklebiters, 3-2. Charles DeFranco scored both goals for the Gouging Anklebiters, who were playing with backup goalie Eric “El Guapo” DiPierri between the pipes.

FOR ONCE, THE MATHEMATICS HAD MORE FEMALES IN ATTENDANCE. In her first game of the 2007 season, Sarah Coombs recorded a shutout to lead the Mathematics past Pork Fried Rice, 5-0. The Mathematics received two goals from Andy Levine, including the game winner, two goals from Laura MacNeil, and one goal from Andy Pratt. Pork Fried Rice played without any females for the second straight week.

WITH AGE COMES WISDOM AND PATIENCE. Shane DeBlasio filled in for starting goalie Dave Gil de Rubio and pitched the shutout to lead Fresh Kills past the Rehabs, 2-0. Alexandre Frenette scored the game winning (assist Brice Rosenbloom) goal midway through the first half, and Dave Sokolyansky (assisted by Kevin Foster and B.R. Rolya) added an insurance goal in the second half for Fresh Kills, who received solid defensive play from Amy Jones and B.R.

ROB GORDEN COULD USE A PAIR OF SUNGLASSES. Despite being without six regular players, and having two goals disallowed, the Corlears Hookers coasted to a 6-3 victory as Mighty Squirrels goalie Rob Gorden struggled with the glare coming off of the shiny gold CH logo. Reilly Olson, Josh Sadlier-Brown, and Peter Putka each scored two goals for the Corlears Hookers, and Eric Cole, Craig Thompson, and Arthur Revechkis scored goals for the Mighty Squirrels.

CRUZ CONTROL. Roderick Cruz registered his first shutout of the season, and Tom MacDonald scored three goals, including the game winner, as What The Puck remained undefeated with a 5-0 victory against Cobra Kai.

THE PINK TEAM WAS DESTINED TO WIN ON MOTHER’S DAY. P.T. Walkley scored two goals, including the game winning goal midway through the second half, as the Dark Rainbows rallied from an early deficit to beat the Sky Fighters, 2-1. Trevor Tyrrell recorded 104 saves* (100 of which coming off the stick of Sky Fighters’ Martin Cejka), including many during the last five minutes of the game, for the Dark Rainbows.

JAMES HAD A GOOD DAY. James Pereira scored the only goal of the game late in first half, and James Stein recorded the shutout as Filthy Gorgeous blanked the Tuques, 1-0.

*This number may have been inflated by Dark Rainbows captain Sean Reynolds.

Power Play/Offsides

Power Play:
– Jason Rosenstock’s wardrobe. Unable to play due to a broken toe, Jason Rosenstock of Mexican Standoff took on the role of coach, and dressed the part with a three-piece olive green suit, hand-carved smoking pipe, and brown Bear Bryant style hat. Rosenstock roamed the sidelines with a clipboard and paper towel on which to draw plays, but was frequently seen angrily tossing his hat in a downward trajectory towards the pavement.

Offsides:
– Problems at Moffo. The games at Moffo started late due to a bicycle polo organization using the court until 3:30 PM, but more seriously, female league members were harassed in Spanish by a non-league affiliated Latino male at the bleachers while waiting to play in their games.
