2018 Rose Charities Recap

Message from Rose Charities

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU all for coming out to play hockey and drink for Rose Charities! This year’s tournament was our most successful yet and we owe it all to you.

We had a record breaking year, raising over $9,000 for Physical Therapy Training in Cambodia!! This money goes further than you may realize. By supporting Physical Therapy in Cambodia, you are helping people heal from injuries – keeping them healthy, working and out of poverty.  Your contributions are more than just a handout; Physical Therapy means that our patients can work and support their families, empowering them to help themselves. Rose Charities believes in supporting local communities by employing and training locals within the community for greater and longer lasting impact. We are a volunteer organization that operates on close to zero overhead, ensuring all of your donations go directly to the project.

Congratulations to Team 1 for taking it home, and to Team Michigan for giving them a hard fought battle (again). To all the other teams: thanks for your energy and sportsmanship, and thanks for being thirsty afterwards! Special thanks to our refs, volunteers, and donors – we couldn’t have done this without y’all.

Three Stars of Rose Charities

Third Star goes out to all of the people that volunteered to make this year one of the most memorable.  Thank you Tia for providing breakfast and taking some great photos, Jeff at Fish Market for the Jameson and hosting us, and all the refs like Cheeky, Sam, Hector, Scotty, Zach, Isaac and Bryan.  And a special thanks to Zac for doing just about everything and Hicks for assisting with the scheduling.

Second Star goes out to Charlie O for his outstanding play in net and winning the MVP prize, donated by Rob Meehan, (Level Group) from the Mofo league, who is ALSO offering to donate 10% of his commission to Rose Charities.  Fun fact: Charlie is a BTSH free agent that is well deserving of a home.

First Star goes out to none other than Rachel and the Board of BTSHers – Brady C, Rebecca N, Jason R, Rob W and Arnold S.  Thank you all for bringing together two things that we all love – playing hockey and helping others and drinking (well, okay three things).

Notable Mentions

This year there were nearly 150 people making up a record 10 teams(!).

MDF’s Naji brought a huge number of meshugannehs from his restaurant.  They were a delicious in between games snack.  Thanks!

Only 1 person bled from the face/head this year.  #progress

In his first ball hockey shift ever Rich’s nephew Adam made a sweet assist.  It was the most impressive thing their team did all day.  Don’t even bother to ask about Walker’s +/-.  (It was shameful.)

Nicole from Instant Karma blocked a shot with her right forearm and then two more with her noggin.

LJ showed up late to the tournament, but still made an impact by helping Team Michigan get to the Championship game.  This was her third straight tournament where she was on a team that made it to the Championship game.  Hmmm….

During the Championship game Tia and Ben, of the band Lime Walker, began a duet with a slide-whistle and mini-sax.  (My right ear would like its hearing back.)

Anyone who played on the basketball court now has a new appreciation for the Tompkins East Court.

Phil from GANK stopped by just to make sure people were drinking.

Sizzler has been banned for life.  He knows why…

Jamie and Rockoff continued their streak of winning something during the raffle.

Sam cat-walked away with the purse that looked like a bowling ball bag, Chadwick won the Riveter tickets and speaker, and Michelle, who was a multi-multi winner, was equally thrilled each time her ticket numbers were called.

Mamma’s crispy fried rice was once again the hot menu item.

Even though Cat couldn’t make the tournament she supports Cambodia’s hot sauce.
